About Imagen edits
Imagen saves the editing information for your photos in XMP format, a proprietary Adobe format that saves editing information for each photo. You need to save this XMP information in each Adobe program differently to see updates to your editing results. Imagen supports Lightroom Classic, Lightroom Creative Cloud, Photoshop, and Bridge.
You must use Lightroom Classic to view edits and not the default image viewer on your computer.
The XMP information is saved differently depending on the photo's file format.
RAW photos and sidecar XMP files
For RAW photos, the XMP file is a separate sidecar file created in the same folder as the original photo. The XMP file has the same name as the RAW photo, but its extension is XMP. To see the edits or culling information, the XMP file must be in the same folder and with the same name as the original photo, like this:
These are the RAW formats supported by Imagen: NEF, CR2, CR3, ARW, NRW, CRW, SRF, SR2, ORF, RW2, RAF, PTX, PEF, RWL, SRW, 3FR, and FFF.
DNG and JPEG photos with embedded XMP information
For DNG and JPEG photos, the XMP information is embedded in the photo itself.
Find my edits in Lightroom Classic
If you downloaded a project to review the edits, but images aren’t edited properly when you open the Lightroom Classic catalog, try these steps before calling support.
- Review our guide to editing with Imagen.
- Make sure Lightroom Classic is closed.
- Open Imagen and go to the Projects page. This link opens the Project page in the Imagen app.
- In the row of the project you already downloaded, click the three dots at the end of the row and select Download Edits.
The summary of the edited images opens. By default, it's the same folder as the original photos. If you moved your photos, click Browse to set their new location. Your photos must be stored locally on your computer or on an external hard drive. They can’t be stored in the cloud.
- In the bottom left corner, verify that the total number of photos is the same number as the number in the Photos column in the project. If there are issues, open the Filters and Selection lists to verify that the filters and the file locations are correct.
- Click Download Edits.
When the download finishes, there is a message with the number of edits and a link to the Lightroom Classic catalog.
- Click Open LR Catalog. If you uploaded your original photos from a Lightroom Classic catalog, you don't need to do anything to see your edits. When Imagen downloads edits for Lightroom Classic, it embeds the XMP edit information in the same catalog as the original photos.
When you upload your original photos from a folder instead of a catalog but want to review them in Lightroom Classic, Lightroom Classic needs to read the XMP edit information from the photos.
- In Lightroom Classic, select the Library tab.
- Select the images that you edited in Imagen and downloaded for review in Lightroom Classic.
- From the Metadata menu, select Read Metadata from File.
When you upload your final edits, Imagen takes the changes from the catalog itself.
- To review the same edited images in your Lightroom catalog, make sure the filters are the same as in Imagen. To remove all filters, in the Filter list, select Filters Off.
- If you need our help, re-upload the images in a new project and contact support. In your support request, give the support team the details of this duplicate project, and we’ll give you credits for the edits.
