This guide covers how to review culling results in grid view and in loupe view. The review depends on the culling method you chose.
- If you culled your photos to keep the best photos in a group, see Review the best photos of each group.
- If you culled to an exact number, see Review the best photos after culling to an exact number.
Review the best photos of each group
During your review, you’ll see similar photos grouped together, and Imagen rates the best one of each group. You can review the duplicates and choose a different photo as the best one, if needed. Also, Imagen finds good-quality photos that are unique and flags them for your review too.
If you have sneak peeks, see these guidelines.
-
Make sure you are on the same computer where you culled your photos. When you start a culling project, complete it on the same computer. If you open the project on a different computer, you'll only see Imagen's culling results without your local changes. When the culling is complete, click Review Culling to open Culling Studio.
(First-time only) The Culling Studio Quick Start opens.
A culling summary opens.
-
Click Got it to close the summary, and Culling Studio opens in grid view. Imagen has rated your photos and grouped them by your culling preferences. In the example below, we use the default preferences, Imagen’s best practice.
-
Review your results. See the sections below for more information. If you need help from support, include screen captures and examples in your ticket.
If you expect to see edited previews but don't see them, try reinstalling the DNG converter. If that doesn't work, see Troubleshoot edited previews not showing in Culling Studio.
- Continue to Send to edit or Optional: Export culling results to review ratings.
Filter your photos by ratings, flags, and camera type
To filter the best pick from Imagen culling, we recommend you filter your photos by Keepers and Standalones. Keepers are the best photos from a group of similar photos. Standalones are unique photos. They don't have duplicates and are not part of a group. See our guide for more information on understanding culling results and ratings.
If you set up culling to include sneak peeks, see Review culling results with sneak peeks.
You can choose which filters to display:
Sort your photos by date, name, and stars
By default, photos are sorted by capture date and grouped accordingly. When you sort by any other value, you lose your groups. To go back to the groups, sort by Capture date again.
You can sort photos by:
- Capture date
- File name
- Star rating
- Flagged
Switch between original photos and an edited preview
If you choose to review photos with an edited preview so that you can see them with your profile, you can toggle between the original photo and the edited one.
The edited previews are available for 60 days from the date you created your project.
Zoom in and out of the previews to see more details
You can resize the previews using the S, M, L, and XL buttons in the bottom-left of the footer.
Review the best photos after culling to an exact number
When Culling Studio opens with your results, you’ll see the best photos we found, based on the number you set. These photos are called Keepers. More great photos that rated highly are grouped together as Extras. Make sure to review the Extras too, because you’ll probably find some great shots in this group. You can change the ratings as you review the photos.
- Make sure you are on the same computer where you culled your photos. If you open the project on a different computer, you won't see the culling results. On the Projects page, click Review culling.
A summary of your results opens with the number of Keepers, Extras, and Unrated photos.
- Click Got it to see your results in Culling Studio. The results are filtered to only show you Keepers. If you don't see edited previews, try reinstalling the DNG converter. If that doesn't work, see Troubleshoot edited previews not showing in Culling Studio.
- Review the Keepers. If the number of Keepers is less than what you set, we didn't find enough top-rated photos. Use the shortcut keys to speed up your review. See the sections below for more information.
- After reviewing the Keepers, click the Review Extras button to review more great photos to add to your results.
Use the shortcut keys to speed up your review. To see all the shortcuts, click the Shortcut keys button in the top-right corner.

Reviewing in loupe view
Here’s an example workflow in loupe view.
-
Similar photos have a number next to the image, showing how many images are in the group.
To review photos in a group, first click the keeper. Thumbnail images in the group open under the keeper. Hover over any thumbnail image in the group. Then, click it. You'll see a white frame around the thumbnail. Press the space bar.
A pop-up of the image opens. Use the mouse or arrow keys to navigate to the image you want. Pick your favorite shot by changing the ratings inside each image.
-
For loupe view, double-click an image, and press the spacebar to enter Loupe view.
Use the keyboard arrow keys to browse images in Loupe view. For images in a group, click the up arrow to go into the group and browse the images. Use the keyboard shortcuts to change filters quickly.
- Click the Hide filmstrip button to toggle the thumbnail view. Press the F key to see the photo in full screen.
Next steps
You can send your photos to edit in Imagen or export the results to review in another software.
Sending photos to edit
After you review your photos, you can send them straight to edit.
Exporting results
If you want to export your culling results to review them in another software before editing in Imagen, see Export culling results to review ratings. Note that if you reorganize your photos on your computer, you’ll need to create a new project in Imagen to edit them, since they aren't in the same location.
